Protecting the Rivers that Connect Us
Conserving riparian habitat (habitat near rivers, streams and lakes) is a key element in the protection of terrestrial and marine habitats, since these ecosystems are closely connected.
Urban Sloth Project: the impacts of habitat disturbance
The Urban Sloth Project is an ongoing, long-term investigation into the impacts of habitat disturbance and rainforest urbanization on wild sloths in Costa Rica. Over the past five years, we have monitored 32 wild sloths using advanced tracking technology and micro data loggers – and we are adding new sloths to the project every month.
Three-fingered sloth 'adopts' a two-fingered sloth baby!
These two sloths are not only different species, but they belong to two completely different families, separated by over 30 million years of evolution. Cross-species adoptions like this are incredibly rare in the wild, with only 3 other documented observations of this happening.
Helping sloths by going plastic-free: 11 daily items you can change today!
July is plastic-free month. It is an opportunity to reflect on how we can reduce our plastic consumption, which not only harms our marine and terrestrial ecosystems but threatens our health as well.
Sloth starts using a wildlife bridge in record time
This video of a three-fingered sloth using a wildlife bridge is the exciting result of the coordinated efforts of many people. We installed a Sloth Crossing for her and she started using it in record time (less than a month!).
7 gifts that rainforests give to humanity
One of the things that I love most about the rainforest is its otherness – trees that stretch into the sky, hosting worlds of life that I may only glimpse from a distance. Entering the forest is a humbling experience, it reminds me of the vastness and diversity of life on this planet and how much there is yet to be seen.
The Real Cost of a Cheap Pineapple from Costa Rica

How are sloths affected by desertification and drought?
As a child, upon hearing that there is an increase in “desertification” worldwide I probably would have been overjoyed, imagining molten brownies and ice cream sundaes overflowing with chocolate syrup. But desertification (with one “s” instead of two), unfortunately, does not consist of a surplus of desserts.
Helping Sloths By Helping Dogs
You might find them both featured in baby animal calendars or filling the feeds of animal aficionados. But the lives of these two animals are entangled not just because of their comparable cuteness.
Social distancing: learning from sloths
It is an unnerving time. The world watches with baited breath as the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread and social distancing becomes the norm. Doubts about the stability of the future and concerns for our loved ones press on our mind making it difficult to think clearly.
World Wildlife Day: why do we celebrate this day
World Wildlife Day is the most important global annual event dedicated to wildlife. On the 3rd of March in 1973 the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was born.
Love and Respect for Sloths
Do you ever smile when you are anxious? Laugh when you feel uncomfortable? Often, our external appearances can be deceiving.
The Wildlife Selfie Problem
Animals all over the world are being exploited for hands-on wildlife encounters. We might think that a photo of us riding an elephant, swimming with a dolphin – or holding a sloth – will impress our friends and family.
Sloth Problems (and how to solve them)
Here we detail the 7 biggest threats to wild sloth populations and explain what we are doing to help. In all cases, the best approach is through the development of long-term conservation solutions that provide sustainable ways for sloths to coexist with the people sharing their habitat.
New Sloth Crossing Wildlife Bridges
This month we are delighted to have installed 2 new Sloth Crossing wildlife bridges in the South Caribbean region of Costa Rica!
Sloths need more than just Cecropia for survival
Why do scientists sometimes feel the need to jump to extra conclusions, just so that they can have an eye-catching story for the media?
Sloths and Palm Oil: how can you help?
The world is waking up to the palm oil crisis that has driven orangutans to the brink of extinction, but is boycotting palm oil really the answer? Unfortunately no, but that doesn’t mean that we are powerless.
