Speaking strictly as a sloth
I’m deeply wounded, even wroth
To see how you people scoff and malign us.
We’re even in your deadly sins —
A nasty list to be put in
And not how Nature meant to define us.
But if you have time to wait,
Then I can set you straight.
You call me slow
But you don’t know
That I’m right on time.
You want slow? It’s these trees!
Please — they take forever.
These lazy trees —
Barely moving
With toes like these
I’m meant for grooving
Who has all day
to wait for a branch to sway?
Or roots to sink in clay?
They’re just lazy
If you go down — underground
Instead of climbing
Through dirt and stones
Big lizard bones
You’ll find diamonds
They make a tree
look like hummingbird and bee
and the speed of guys like me
quite reasonable
You call me slow
But you don’t know
That I’m right on time.
You want slow?
It’s these torpid trees!
please — they take forever
And that’s a mighty long time!
Take it from me —
and these trees —
it is key
To be leisurely

Sloth in the Spotlight
Ur-Song Music is proud to donate “You Call Me Slow (The Sloth Song)” to SloCo. It’s a lighthearted, Broadway-style ballad that invites listeners to slow down and enjoy grooving at the speed of sloth.
We’re Eric Nicolas (musician) and Veronica Belafi (manager), and we started Ur-Song to make custom music for nonprofits like SloCo to support their mission & vision. We learn about an organization’s goals, and then write and produce an awesome professional recording for them to use on social media, in videos, at fundraisers—wherever music can help.
Veronica brought SloCo to the table to Eric’s delight; he’d become enthralled by his first sloth in Costa Rica about 20 years ago—a dream subject for a song about a worthy (and adorable) cause we personally support. After our conversation with SloCo about their efforts, Eric got to work writing a song that would raise awareness and spirits by making us laugh.
We wanted people to delight in the song’s sly rhymes, long notes, background vocals, and unlikely tempo. Even the drums are lazy. “You people” (we humans) are too fast. And “these trees” are too slow. So, what does it mean to be “right on time?” This singing sloth shows us.
Our goal at Ur-Song: to write more songs for well-meaning causes like SloCo—donating them when we can, and generating business along the way. Good music moves people as nothing else can.

Eric’s decades of experience writing and playing music in New York City has made him an expert in knowing what people want to hear and giving them exactly that. Veronica’s background in the humanities and in marketing has prepared her to find a musical niche in the nonprofit world.
