99 Signal Frequency | December 2025

Early this month, Deborah was using the very first tree she was caught in, which she has not used in a while! She was about 9 meters up the tree using a vine to rest. We also spotted a juvenile sloth in a tree next to her, but still no way of telling if it is Mel.

Deep in December, the rainy season is well underway here and tracking our sloths has become nearly impossible, as our tracking equipment cannot get wet.

Nowadays, there is a surprising number of sloths in the small forest patch that Debbie calls home. We found three other sloths before we confirmed Debbie. The first one was way too small, the second clearly did not have a collar, and the third was massive. Finally, we found a medium-sized Choloepus sloth with a 99 signal frequency from our antenna, and there was Debbie, lying on her back.

As you know, Debbie lives in a narrow strip of forest between the beach and a busy road, and her seemingly nonchalant attitude towards this has given us valuable insights into how sloths cope with urban disturbances. With the holiday season approaching, we are keeping a close eye on the already rising traffic levels and monitoring how this increase may influence her behaviour.
