JetSloth and Gravity Forms Sponsor 1000-Tree Plantation for Restoring Sloth Habitat.
To celebrate Sloth Month in October last year, our friends at JetSloth and Gravity Forms generously donated $10,000 to plant 1000 trees in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica. JetSloth and Gravity Forms are among the most popular tools for creating and managing website forms (including ours!).
Rare record of a sloth giving birth on the ground
Earlier this year, Jenny Berla and her family vacationed in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, where they witnessed an uncommon event – a sloth giving birth on the ground! Sloth births typically occur in trees, making this sighting particularly remarkable.
Could Antibiotic-Producing Sloth Fur Be the Key to Fighting Bacteria Resistance?
Recent research has shown that sloths in Costa Rica have bacteria in their fur that produces antibiotics. Could this finding have application in humans?
International Workers' Day and Idleness
Today is International Workers’ Day. And what does this have to do with sloths? First, it makes us think about the unfair name of these animals, a form of the word ‘lazy’ in most languages. But even though sloths are not lazy but energy-efficient, it also makes us think about laziness and how in our societies’ overfall, being a little bit idle and slowing down is not permitted. If you have today off, you are probably feeling guilty about it.
April 2023 | Tales from the Jungle
April was a busy month in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica; we have updates about Luna, an exciting new auction, bridges, camera trap footage, and more!
Sloth Versus Manatee
Do sloths and manatees have anything in common? One is a slow-moving arboreal mammal, and the other is a lumbering aquatic creature, so it’s hard to see the similarities at first. But let’s take a closer look and compare these two lovable, oddball animals. You’ll be surprised by a unique feature they share!
A little bit of Faith | Tracking Diaries #14
Hello! I’m Faith, a student from the UK, currently doing a 12-month research placement with the Sloth Conservation Foundation working towards my degree in Zoology. Believe it or not I came across SloCo while online shopping. I was looking at a sustainable clothing brand that donates to several wildlife charities to aid conservation efforts, one of them being SloCo.
March 2023 | Tales From The Jungle
This month’s newsletter begins with a heartbreaking story of one of our beloved Urban Sloths, but no matter how bad things get, there’s always something that restores your faith in this world. Ours comes from YOU, our sloth supporters, and no amount of gratitude expresses what our community gives back to us in times of need.
106 years old and increasingly tolerant of dogs...
THE 19th-century French poet Gérard de Nerval used to take his pet lobster for walks in Paris at the end of a silk ribbon. Asked why he was so fond of this animal, he replied: “I have a liking for lobsters. They are peaceful, serious creatures. They know the secrets of the sea and they don’t bark.”
First record of sloths using thermal drones
Drones are revolutionizing the way scientists collect data, especially in the study of biodiversity and conservation. The use of drones equipped with a range of sensors, including thermal cameras, can help identify species and track individual animals, making it easier to study and protect them.
Sloth Versus Giant Tortoise
Wait — we’re comparing a sloth with a reptile? It’s never been done before! What could a sloth possibly have in common with a reptile? On the face of it, there’s not much that a warm-blooded sloth could share with a cold-blooded reptile. But these slow and charismatic creatures might be more similar than you’d think.
Tales From the Jungle: February 2023
We hope our newsletter finds you enjoying this lovely month of hearts, friendship, romance, and other springtime giddies. February has been an exciting month here at SloCo, and we are thrilled to be sharing the news and updates with you!
First Fossils of an Aquatic Sloth Found in Continental Environment in Argentina
Researchers have discovered the remains of a specimen of Thalassocnus, a marine sloth found for the first time in a continental environment in Northern Argentina. This discovery significantly expands the geographic distribution of this lineage of fossil sloths.
Starting 2023 with a Heart Full of Love | Tales from the Jungle January 2023
At the end of last year, our tight-knit SloCo team scattered far and wide to celebrate the holidays with their families and friends. Some went to the other side of Costa Rica, some as far as countries such as Argentina, the UK, Germany, or the US.
The best job I have ever had | Tracking Diaries #13
I have been working as a researcher for SloCo for only 7 months. The time has passed extremely fast, and still, I have learned incredible things that can only be taught in the field, working with people face to face and always improving my skills, not only my knowledge as a scientist but improving my second language which is English (people say I can speak good but I know I can get better at it).
The Urban Sloth Project Recap - Part II | 2022
The Urban Sloth Project is a research aiming to study how habitat disturbance in urbanized areas of the South Caribbean of Costa Rica is affecting the behavior and ecology of wild sloths. The project is entering its 4th year, and surely, monitoring sloths is never a boring task.
Resurrecting giant ground sloths with Augmented Reality
For a chance to picture what the prehistoric Shasta ground sloth may have looked like, virtual and augmented reality may be our best bet. Ice Age giants such as mammoths, mastodons, giant beavers, saber-toothed cats, and dire wolves once roamed the American continent with giant ground sloths. But around 10,000 years ago, after the end of the last Ice Age, America’s impressive megafauna went extinct.
2022 | A year in review by Dr. Rebecca Cliffe
For SloCo, December is a time for reflection and review; we write our annual reports, study what went wrong, celebrate what went right, and continuously look for what we can improve. Overall 2022 has been a great year for us: we’ve achieved (and exceeded!) so many goals that our motto for the year has become “Dreams Really Do Come True”!
Tales from the Jungle | November 2022
Those of you who have been following SloCo’s work for the last few years know that our modus operandi is community-based projects: reforestation, urban mitigation, powerline insulation, wildlife bridges, responsible tourism campaigns, and more. However, our ultimate goal has always been to protect wildlife habitat before it needs restoring, and to that end, we are really excited to announce that SloCo is creating a 20-hectare reserve of primary forest in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica!
