Earth day

Holding the Line for Sloths

Along Costa Rica’s South Caribbean coast lies one of the most important strongholds for sloths: a narrow strip of forest known as the ‘maritime zone’ that runs alongside the beach and supports the highest densities of sloths recorded anywhere in the world.

Sloths like Deborah, Luiza, and Tango depend on this strip of forest every day. But recent storms and rising sea levels have washed away entire sections of the forest, destroying the canopy connectivity that they need to survive.

This Earth Day, we are working with the local community to restore and reconnect the damaged sections of the maritime zone by planting trees, installing canopy bridges, and making sure this strip of forest continues to function as the lifeline it currently is.

Help us plant 500 native, sloth-friendly trees and install canopy bridges.

This strip of forest isn’t just important because of how many sloths live there. It’s also the main biological corridor connecting what remains of the surrounding forest. Our recent GIS analysis has shown just how critical this is. The wider coastal landscape is already heavily fragmented and degraded, and is approaching a tipping point where the ecosystem could begin to break down.

We can reconnect their world.

Through our Connected Gardens Project, we’ve planted over 13,500 trees and installed more than 370 canopy bridges across the South Caribbean of Costa Rica.
