In this picture you can see our Connected Gardens Project manager, Patricio, riding his bike to deliver some tree saplings. Unless is strictly necessary, whether it´s because the place to plant is too far, or requires a big quantity of trees, We always choose our bikes as our principal way of transportation.

One of the things that I love most about the rainforest is its otherness – trees that stretch into the sky, hosting worlds of life that I may only glimpse from a distance. Entering the forest is a humbling experience, it reminds me of the vastness and diversity of life on this planet and how much there is yet to be seen.

In stores and supermarkets in North America and Europe, you can buy a pineapple for just a couple of dollars. But what is the real cost behind that cheap price? 

As a child, upon hearing that there is an increase in “desertification” worldwide I probably would have been overjoyed, imagining molten brownies and ice cream sundaes overflowing with chocolate syrup. But desertification (with one “s” instead of two), unfortunately, does not consist of a surplus of desserts.

Somehow we are almost half-way through 2020 – a year that is turning out to be remarkable for all the wrong reasons. Thankfully I will be sharing with you some happy sloth news and I am relieved to report that Team Sloth are all “hanging in there”.

You may be surprised that only three of the seven species of sloths are considered threatened with extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), who the vast majority of the scientific community consider having compiled the most comprehensive and reliable information source of population counts and risk levels facing flora, fauna, and fungi.

Our sloth conservation programs are based in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica – a region that depends heavily upon tourism. From the local hotel owners to the people that sell cold coconuts on the beach, people are starting to struggle.

At times like these, it can be easy to get wrapped up in the fear and uncertainty of everything. One of the best ways to combat negative feelings is to practice gratitude – which is why I want to share with you some of our positive “tales from the jungle”!

Cecilia, our communications officer, comes from the steppes in Patagonia, a dry, arid, windy, and cold landscape very far away from the hot, humid rainforests of Costa Rica. Her journey in conservation began with a bunch of photos of birds.

You might find them both featured in baby animal calendars or filling the feeds of animal aficionados. But the lives of these two animals are entangled not just because of their comparable cuteness.

Happy #WorldWildlifeDay  the theme this year is “sustaining all life on Earth”. All species are dependent on each other for survival – sloths included! But what important role do sloths play? How do they benefit other species? Well did you know that sloth hair is home to a whole ecosystem that is found nowhere else on earth?

It’s a bright, sunny morning in Costa Rica and we are all quarantined inside our beautiful jungle homes. We are social distancing and practicing solitary sloth-like existences in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It is an unnerving time. The world watches with baited breath as the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread and social distancing becomes the norm. Doubts about the stability of the future and concerns for our loved ones press on our mind making it difficult to think clearly.

Women’s day is celebrated annually on March 8th all over the world. It is a day to celebrate the contributions of women, and we would like to focus on the increasingly important role played by strong women in the world of wildlife conservation!

World Wildlife Day is the most important global annual event dedicated to wildlife. On the 3rd of March in 1973 the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was born.

What exactly is a sloth? Are they related to bears? Monkeys? Marsupials? No! Sloths are actually part of a super ancient (and super strange) family of mammals called the xenarthrans (pronounced zen-ar-thrans).
